Prof Hakeem Fawehinmi is a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology. He is well rooted in the finest academic traditions and has a wealth of experience in Institutional Administration having been Two-time Head of Department of Anatomy (2005 – 2007; 2007 – 2009 Niger Delta University), Associate Dean (2010 – 2012) and Dean (2012 – 2014) Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and two terms Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) (2016 – 2020) of the University of Port Harcourt. He has served in several Statutory and Ad–hoc Committees and Boards, attributes which have equipped him with the requisite skills to provide leadership to a well-informed, articulate and growing academic community.

More than a Prof

He has been an active member of his National and International Professional Associations where he served as Secretary-General and Member of National Executive Council (1999–2000) Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State, Editor–in–Chief of the Journal of Anatomical Sciences and President of the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria (2014-2016). He has received many Academic and Community Service Awards and Prizes such as Visiting Researcher to the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, University College London, Fellow Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, Fellow Anatomical Society of Nigeria, Fellow Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria and Fellow Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria.

Over these 30 years, Prof Fawehinmi has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research and has 4 Book Chapters, 3 Monographs, with over 100 scholarly articles and 27 Conference Abstracts published in reputable peer reviewed mostly indexed journals, visible in conventional academic search engines, with a ResearchGate and Google Scholar h-Index of 13 respectively, to his credit. He has reviewed 4 referred books, written Forward to 4, presented 16 Guest Lectures and Keynote Speeches and delivered the 111th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Port Harcourt titled “Different Tailors for the Same People; The Same Surgeon for Different People” in October 2014.

He has participated and served as Resource Person in 78 Conferences, Workshops and Training Programmes in Africa, Europe, the Middle-East and North America, and has supervised over 100 BSc Projects, 15 MSc, 13 PhD/MD Dissertations and Thesis. Many of his mentees are now distinguished Professors in their own right, occupying important positions in their respective institutions, at home and abroad.

Prof Fawehinmi has attracted and served as Principal Investigator to some National and International Competitive Grants with his invention of the AMRG Anthropometry Chair for Dimensional Body Measurements winning a Patent Certificate of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has been involved in the conceptualization and delivery of several MoUs, fostered sustainable linkages and affiliations between Town and Gown; sourcing and facilitating Grants and funding support into the University System, Endowment of Prizes and Professorial Chairs.

Prof Fawehinmi has been External Examiner and Assessor to the Professoriate to almost all the first- and second-generation Universities in the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria including the University of Exeter, and has led Visitation Panels of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and on the team of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to several medical Schools. In 2021, Prof Hakeem Fawehinmi was cited in the Africa Scientist Rankings by Alper – Doger Scientific Index and is currently the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, a conventional private University located in Asa, Abia State.

He is married to Dr. Hadeezat Omotayo Fawehinmi, a Lecturer with the University of Port Harcourt and they have 5 children.
